Choosing the right outer casing: PVC, FEP and silicone

This post is also available in: Deutsch

Different materials such as PVC, FEP and silicone offer their own advantages for cable sheaths. Each material has properties that are particularly suitable depending on the application.

PVC (polyvinyl chloride) is inexpensive, flexible and robust, and offers good electrical insulation. It is well suited for indoor applications and in household and industrial electronics. However, it has a lower heat resistance, which makes it less suitable for applications with higher temperatures.

FEP (fluoroethylene propylene) is resistant to chemicals and heat and is therefore used in demanding environments. It is ideal for applications in the medical and automotive sectors as well as for demanding industrial applications. FEP is also abrasion-resistant and can withstand extreme temperatures, which favours its use in chemically active and heat-intensive areas.

Silicone offers excellent flexibility and remains elastic even at low temperatures. Its high temperature resistance and weather resistance make it particularly suitable for outdoor use and industrial applications where high temperatures occur. Silicone also insulates well against moisture and is suitable for medical and electrical applications.

The choice of the right sheath material therefore depends heavily on the intended use:

  • PVC for cost-conscious, general applications.
  • FEP for heat- and chemical-resistant environments.
  • Silicone for flexible and temperature-intensive applications.
